What is the “Thin Blue Line”?

The Thin Blue Line is a symbol used by law enforcement, originating in the United Kingdom but now prevalent in the United States and Canada to commemorate fallen and to show support for the living law enforcement officers and to symbolize the relationship of law enforcement in the community as the protectors of fellow civilians from criminal elements.

It is an analogy to the term Thin Red Line.

Each stripe on the emblem represents certain respective figures: the blue center line represents law enforcement, the top black stripe represents the public and the bottom represents the criminals.

The idea behind the graphic is that law enforcement (the blue line) is what stands between the violence and victimization by criminals and the would-be victims of crime.

Proponents of the symbol assert that the identifier is intended to show support for police.[citation needed] In the wake of controversies over police shootings, the Thin Blue Line Flag has become popular among law enforcement personnel, their families and supporters. //Source: Wikipedia.org//

SPECIALIZED SERVICE AWARDS

It is becoming more common for cities and agencies to create custom citation bars.

Emergency Medical Technicians and First Responders have received commendation bars by working through some of our Nations Emergencies such as hurricanes, and other natural disasters.
Certified instructors in almost every field have also created award service bars to set themselves apart in position.

HISTORY OF CITATION BARS

They started during the US Civil War and were handed out at the unit commander’s sole discretion. Since then, they have become a recognized and formal award given during rank promotions and bravery awards.

Rank Bars is another term used to describe the Citation Bar.
The Rank Bars include the number of years of service the receiver has served, along with awards given for proper firearms use, and a showing off when the receiver mastered a particular type of firearm.
There is also a very unique and special award bar that was created specifically for the heroes of September 11, at the World Trade Center.

Firefighter & EMS Commendation Bars

When firefighter commendation bars are awarded for a job well done, their placement on the uniform is a topic of great discussion among professionals in the field.

Some argue that commendation bars should be positioned above other designations on the firefighter’s uniform, such as name tag or department insignia.

Others prefer to place them below these designations, believing that it allows the fire department award pins to stand out even more.
